Medical research has established that improving your memory skills through simple exercises can ward off the onset Alzheimer’s. For anyone who has first hand experience of this awful condition knows that such simple daily activities are worth it. Here are some of the most effective activities.

Exercise

Believe it or not, simple daily physical exercises increases blood flow to the brain which serves to improve memory and keep the mind sharp. We all know there a dozens of benefits to daily exercise. Here’s yet another one.

Pay Attention

Believe it or not, a lot of our memory problems are not memory problems at all. Rather, the item was never memorized in the first place. Think about it. You meet someone for the first time. You are talking about something. You briefly ask what the other person’s name is and then quickly continue the conversation after they tell you. Moments later you are frustrated that you can’t remember their name. It’s not that you don’t remember, but you never bothered to set it in your memory in the first place. You should develop the habit of repeating in your mind silently the persons name at least 10 times. Or, if you know someone by that else by that name, picture their face in your mind. Then, when you can’t remember their name, you’ll find that your friend’s face easily returns to your mind.

A good way to improve your memory skills is to involve the senses. When you need to memorize something, try to identify a texture, smell, sound, taste or sight with it.

Games

Games like crossword puzzles or sudoku are great ways to keep the mind in shape. These activities are like lifting weights for the brain, and they are fun.

Quit Smoking

Finally, smoking causes arteries to construct which decreases blood flow to the brain. Remember the purpose of physical exercise is to increase blood flow. So, why would you want to do something that does just the opposite? Quitting smoking has a lot of other health benefits as well.
